Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) was founded in 1891 as a two-year Normal School. The school was established to help educate African Americans in the northeastern part of North Carolina. Initially, the school offered instruction in teacher training and industrial education. Eventually, the school expanded its academic offerings to include four-year degrees in liberal arts, business administration, and education. In 1969, the school became a four-year college and changed its name to Elizabeth City State College. In 1979, Elizabeth City State College was granted university status and became Elizabeth City State University.

Throughout the years, ECSU has steadily grown in size and scope. Today, ECSU is a comprehensive regional university offering thirty undergraduate degree programs across five colleges. The university also offers several master’s degree programs within three graduate schools: Education, Business Administration and Science & Technology Studies. ECSU has an enrollment of over 3,000 students from numerous states across the nation as well as several international countries including Germany and Japan. The university’s commitment to excellence has been recognized by U.S News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” list for more than 20 consecutive years; ranking among the top 10 historically black universities for 17 consecutive years since 2001.. In addition to its academic excellence, ECSU is also known for its strong athletic program with teams competing at both the NCAA Division II level as well as at the NAIA level in football only.
