Edward Waters College was founded in 1866, making it the oldest historically black college in the state of Florida and one of the oldest in the United States. The college was established by the African Methodist Episcopal Church and was named after Bishop Edward Waters, who served as its first president.

The college was originally located in Jacksonville, Florida, but moved to its current location in downtown Jacksonville in 1910. During this time, Edward Waters College became one of the first colleges to offer degrees to African Americans.
