ECPI College of Technology was founded in 1966 in Norfolk, Virginia. The school was originally known as Electronic Computer Programming Institute and offered courses in electronics and computer programming. In the 1970s, the school expanded its offerings to include associate degree programs in Electronics Engineering Technology, Computer Systems Technology, and Business Administration. In the 1980s, ECPI began offering bachelor’s degrees in Electronics Engineering Technology and Business Administration. In 1995, the college received accreditation from the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC).

In 2002, ECPI opened a new campus in Charlotte, North Carolina to offer students more opportunities for learning. This new campus allowed students to pursue degrees in business administration as well as other technology-related fields such as Information Systems Security Management and Network Communications Management. In 2008, ECPI launched a new online program that allowed students to take classes from anywhere with an internet connection. This program has since grown to include a variety of degrees including healthcare technology management and game software development.
