Eastern Washington University (EWU) was founded in 1882 as the Benjamin P. Cheney Academy, a private preparatory school. Located in Cheney, Washington, the academy was established by Benjamin P. Cheney, a pioneer in the area who had come to Eastern Washington from Vermont in 1872. Cheney’s goal when founding the academy was to provide quality educational opportunities for young people in the region. The school originally offered classes for students from grades one through twelve and became a popular educational institution very quickly.
In 1889, the academy became a state-supported normal school, offering two-year teaching degrees to its students. In 1937, it was expanded and renamed Eastern Washington College of Education and granted four-year college status. In 1977, it was granted university status and renamed Eastern Washington University of Washington (EWU). Since then, EWU has grown significantly both academically and physically; it now offers more than 140 degree programs at its main campus in Cheney as well as satellite campuses throughout Spokane County. Today’s EWU is known for its excellent faculty members who are dedicated to helping their students succeed both academically and professionally after graduation. Additionally, EWU is committed to providing quality education through research initiatives and community outreach programs that benefit students across the region.
