Eastern Oregon University was founded in 1929 as Eastern Oregon Normal School. It was established in the small town of La Grande with the mission of providing teacher education to rural and underserved communities in the region. The school was renamed Eastern Oregon College of Education in 1937 and began offering bachelor’s degrees in education. In 1973, the college became Eastern Oregon State College and began expanding its curriculum to include more than just education programs. In 1997, it gained university status and was renamed Eastern Oregon University (EOU).
