Eastern Michigan University (EMU) was founded in 1849 as the Michigan State Normal School. It was the first school established in Michigan solely for the purpose of teacher preparation. In 1899, the name of the school was changed to Michigan State Normal College and it began offering a four-year degree program. In 1923, it became a publicly supported institution and changed its name to Eastern Michigan College of Education. The college continued to expand its academic programs and by 1959 had attained university status, prompting a change to Eastern Michigan University.
Throughout its history, EMU has continually adapted to changing educational demands and has become one of the largest universities in the state with an enrollment of over 20,000 students. Today, EMU offers more than 200 undergraduate degree programs across seven colleges and schools: Arts & Sciences; Business; Education; Health & Human Services; Technology; Visual & Performing Arts; and Graduate School. Students have access to cutting-edge research opportunities through various centers such as the Center for Renewable Energy Systems Technology (CREST) and The Institute for Japanese Studies (IJS). Additionally, EMU is home to several prominent athletic teams known as “The Eagles” that compete in NCAA Division I football and basketball games.
