Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) was founded in 1917 by the Virginia Mennonite Conference as a two-year college to provide higher education for young people of the Mennonite faith. The school quickly grew and became a four-year college in 1961. During this same period, EMU began to expand its academic programs, adding new courses and degrees such as business, education, nursing and social work. In 1973, EMU was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). Since then, EMU has continued to grow and develop its academic programs to meet the changing needs of students in an ever-evolving world.
In 1981, EMU added a graduate program which now offers master’s degrees in areas such as counseling, international development and peacebuilding. The university also offers a variety of certificate programs for both undergraduate and graduate students. Over the years, Eastern Mennonite University has also been dedicated to providing quality service learning opportunities with local organizations such as food banks, homeless shelters and other non-profits that serve the Harrisonburg community. These experiences allow students to gain real world experience while helping their local community. Today Eastern Mennonite University continues to provide quality higher education while remaining true to its commitment of serving others through service learning opportunities and other initiatives that benefit the local community.
