Eastern Illinois University was founded in 1895 as the Eastern Illinois State Normal School. It was established to train teachers for the public schools of East Central Illinois. In 1921 the school became Eastern Illinois State Teachers College and eventually became Eastern Illinois University in 1947. During this time, the university began offering a wider range of courses and degrees, including those in the sciences and liberal arts. The university continued to grow throughout the 1950s and 1960s, with its enrollment reaching a record high of over 10,000 students by 1969.
In the 1970s, Eastern Illinois University experienced a period of growth and expansion. New academic departments were added to provide students with more educational opportunities and new facilities were constructed to accommodate the growing student body. In 1980, Eastern Illinois University opened its first residence hall on campus, creating an environment that encouraged student engagement and learning outside of the classroom setting.
