University of Dublin (Ireland) — detailed description, address, opening hours, how to get there. Information about curricula and courses, reviews.

The University of Dublin is the oldest institution of higher education in Ireland. It belongs to a group of universities under the unofficial name of “old universities”, which, in addition to it, includes Oxford and Cambridge universities in England and four universities in Scotland. These institutions of higher education are called ancient because they were all founded in the Middle Ages or in the Renaissance. See Toppharmacyschools.org for information about University of Freiburg Germany.

Dublin University is located in a large complex of beautiful old buildings in Dublin, the capital of Ireland (occupies an area of 190 thousand square meters). The history of these buildings is very interesting. At the very end of the 16th century, a group of enterprising citizens of Dublin turned to the current Queen Elizabeth I with the initiative to create a higher educational institution in Ireland.

Some of the enthusiasts visited the universities of Oxford and Cambridge in England, and they had the idea to create a university in Ireland along the same lines.

However, no one expected a response from the Queen as quickly as it came. Within the city limits, local residents could not find a worthy building for the temple of science, and therefore the inactive and already beginning to decay Monastery of All Saints in the vicinity of the capital was converted into a college. A century later, a new building was built, which became the main one. And then the city grew to such a size that today the university is located in the very center of Dublin.

Dublin University was originally not a university, but a college. It was called the College of the Holy and Indivisible Trinity, in English – Trinity College. And to this day, the University of Dublin differs from Oxford and Cambridge in that it has only one of these colleges, and not several. The terms Dublin University and Trinity College are used interchangeably, often referring to the same higher education institution.

Only men studied at the University of Dublin; for women, higher education in Ireland became available only in 1904. At the same time, Trinity College became the first university in the country to admit the fair sex to high science. Famous graduates of the University of Dublin include writers Samuel Beckett (Ireland), Jonathan Swift and Oscar Wilde (England), mathematician and astronomer William Hamilton, playwright Oliver Goldsmith, politicians Edmund Burke and Isaac Butt, the famous contemporary composer Chris de Burgh.

The terms Dublin University and Trinity College are used interchangeably, often referring to the same higher education institution.

The University of Dublin has six faculties. Each faculty has a list of its departments (specialties). The most popular today is the Faculty of Social Sciences and Economics, and in second place is the Faculty of Cybernetics and Engineering. These two faculties always have the largest number of applicants. In total, about 15 thousand students study at Trinity College.

University of Limerick in Ireland

University of Limerick in Ireland (Ireland) — detailed description, address, opening hours, how to get there. Information about curricula and courses, reviews.

Limerick is a city-county in Ireland, its history dates back to the distant 5th century. This city is the third largest in the country with 70,000 inhabitants. It is quite understandable that in such a large (by the scale of Ireland) and prosperous city there should be its own institution of higher education. Back in 1845, the mayor of Limerick planned to open a university or at least a college here. However, in those years, royal colleges were opened by order of the authorities in other cities of Ireland.

The University of Limerick is quite young, but rapidly developing, it is considered one of the best universities in Ireland.

More than 100 years later, in 1959, the issue of creating a university was raised again. The then mayor of the city and the supreme judge took a special part in this. However, the state was not too interested in opening a whole university, and therefore an institute was founded here in 1960. 12 years later, after solving all the issues related to the creation of a higher educational institution, the first set of students took place. And already in 1989, the National Institute was awarded the title of university.

This university is quite young, but rapidly developing, it is considered one of the best universities in Ireland. The University of Limerick owes a lot to Charles Feeney, a well-known American philanthropist and businessman who does charity work in many countries of the world and, of course, in Ireland. For the development of the university, he allocated a grant in the amount of 175 million US dollars.

Today the University of Limerick offers education in four faculties. The most popular among students are the Kemmie Business School and the Faculty of Science and Engineering – this usually sees the most competition. Here you need to study for a bachelor’s degree for 4 years, and then you can continue your studies – for a master’s or even a doctor of science. The academic year at the University of Limerick lasts from September to May – as in all educational institutions, and documents for admission are accepted until April. Not only Irish applicants, but also foreigners can enter the University of Limerick, however, they must show excellent command of the English language.

If knowledge is not enough, foreign students can take an English language course, which lasts one academic year.

This university, thanks to the above funding, can provide students with a lot of opportunities for excellent education. These are educational buildings equipped with the latest technology, and laboratories, as well as cultural and sports facilities. The student community has several swimming pools (including diving), tennis courts, playing fields, gyms, etc. at the disposal of the student community.

The University of Limerick is located in a very picturesque area. Its complex occupies about 80 hectares on the banks of the river, where there are parks and squares and an abundance of greenery. The nearest airport is located 26 km from the city – in Shannon, from here you can get to Limerick by regular bus or taxi. From Ireland’s capital Dublin to Limerick can be reached in 1 hour and 15 minutes. And the university itself is located just 5 km from the central part of Limerick.
