Drury University is a private liberal arts university located in Springfield, Missouri. It was founded in 1873 by Congregational minister and educator Dr. David R. Francis and his wife Mary Louise Harrison Drury as a Christian academy for girls and boys. The school was originally called the Springfield Female Academy, but changed its name to Drury College in 1876 when it began offering college-level courses. In the following decades, the college expanded its curriculum to include engineering and business courses, as well as a strong focus on literature and the fine arts. In 1957, the school’s name was changed to Drury University when it began offering graduate degrees in addition to its undergraduate programs.
The university continued to grow throughout the 1960s with new buildings being added to accommodate more students, faculty and staff. The campus also added new academic programs such as an honors program, master’s degrees and doctorates in various disciplines such as business administration and education. In recent years, Drury has become increasingly diverse with students from all over the world attending classes on campus or online through distance learning programs. The university has also been involved in several construction projects including a new student union building that opened in 2013 and a state-of-the-art library that opened in 2016.
