Drew University was founded in 1867 by Reverend John F. Hurty, a Methodist minister from Indiana who sought to establish a religious institution in the New Jersey area. The university was initially called the Theological Seminary of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and was located in Madison, New Jersey. It was later renamed Drew Theological Seminary, and then Drew University in 1899.
The university has been a leader in education and research since its founding, and has had many notable alumni over the years. In 1922, the first female graduate of Drew University received her degree. Since then, Drew has become increasingly diverse with students from all backgrounds studying at the university.
