Dixie State College of Utah was founded in 1911 as St. George Stake Academy. It was the first institution of higher education in the state of Utah to be supported by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). In 1923, it was renamed Dixie Junior College, and in 1933, it became Dixie College. In 2000, Dixie College officially became Dixie State College of Utah after being granted university status by the state legislature. In 2013, Dixie State University began its transition to a four-year university and now offers over 150 majors and degree programs for students. The college also has many student organizations, clubs, intramural sports teams, and a robust athletics program that competes in NCAA Division II athletics.
