Dickinson State University (DSU) was founded in 1918 as a two-year teacher’s college. It was the first higher education institution to open its doors in western North Dakota, and it has been dedicated to providing quality education ever since. The school was originally named Dickinson State Normal School, and it housed just 117 students when it opened. Over the years, DSU has seen tremendous growth, with enrollment increasing from 117 students in 1918 to over 2,500 students today. In 1988, Dickinson State Normal School changed its name to Dickinson State University and began offering four-year degrees in addition to two-year degrees for teachers.
Since then, DSU has continued to expand its academic programs and offerings. In 2003, the university opened its first graduate program in business administration and now offers five master’s degree programs and seven baccalaureate degrees as well as a variety of associate’s degrees.
