DePauw University was founded in 1837 by Indiana Methodists and was originally known as Indiana Asbury University. The school was named after Bishop Robert DePauw, who provided the land and funds to make the university a reality. The first classes were held in 1843 with just over 100 students. Over the years, DePauw has grown to become one of the top liberal arts universities in the nation. In 1884, DePauw became one of the first coeducational universities in the country, allowing women to attend classes alongside men. This was an important milestone for women’s rights and education in America.
The 20th century saw many changes at DePauw University including its expansion into graduate studies and professional programs such as law and business administration. In 1986, DePauw opened up its East College building which houses its library and administrative offices today.
