DePaul University Acceptance Rate, Average GPA, SAT and ACT Scores

DePaul University was founded in 1898 by the Congregation of the Mission, a Roman Catholic religious order more commonly known as the Vincentians. The university was originally located on the Near North Side of Chicago and named St. Vincent’s College. It was renamed DePaul University in 1907, after Saint Vincent de Paul, a 17th-century French priest who is widely regarded as one of the founders of modern charitable works.

In 1912, DePaul moved to its current location on Sheffield Avenue and began offering courses in law and commerce. During this time period, women were first admitted to the university as students and faculty members. The school continued to expand its academic offerings in the 1920s with new degree programs in accounting, education, journalism, music and science. In the 1950s, DePaul opened its first international campus in Rome and began offering degree programs abroad.

By the 1960s, DePaul had become an independent university governed by a board of trustees who were appointed by both local church leaders and civic authorities. This allowed for greater academic freedom and autonomy than what had been previously possible under church control. During this time period, DePaul also became an important center for civil rights activism due to its involvement with Martin Luther King Jr., Ralph Abernathy and other prominent figures in the movement.
