Delta State University (DSU) was established in 1924, when the Mississippi Legislature passed the Act to Establish the Delta State Teachers College. The college was founded on a mission of providing quality education to the people of the Mississippi Delta. It began offering classes in 1925 and granted its first degrees in 1929. Over time, it has evolved into a comprehensive university with five colleges and over 40 degree programs, as well as graduate and doctoral programs.
In 1965, the Mississippi Legislature renamed Delta State Teachers College to Delta State College, which reflected its expansion beyond teacher training into other areas of study. In 1974, Delta State College became an accredited university and was renamed Delta State University. Since then, DSU has continued to grow significantly in size and scope. It now offers more than 50 undergraduate degree programs and numerous graduate degrees through its five colleges: Arts & Sciences; Business; Education & Human Sciences; Health Sciences & Professional Studies; and Graduate Studies & Research.
In recent years, DSU has also become a leader in interdisciplinary research initiatives such as cybersecurity, geospatial technologies for coastal resilience studies, energy research initiatives for sustainable development projects in rural communities across Mississippi’s delta region, smart agriculture technologies for precision farming operations throughout the state and beyond, health care initiatives to improve access to quality care in underserved areas of Mississippi’s delta region, and numerous other projects focused on improving Quality of Life for citizens within the state of Mississippi.
