Defiance College was established in 1850 as the Defiance Female Seminary. Located in Defiance, Ohio, it was founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church and its first president was Reverend J.C. Finley. The college was originally intended to be a school for educating young women and the first class had 32 students. In 1872, the name of the school changed to Defiance College and it began admitting male students as well. Over the next few decades, several buildings were added to the campus including a library and science building. With an ever-growing enrollment, more faculty members were added to meet the needs of its students. In 1930, Defiance College became affiliated with The United Methodist Church and continues to offer programs in liberal arts, business administration, science and technology, education, nursing and social work. Throughout its history, Defiance College has held true to its mission of providing a quality education for all students regardless of race or religion. It has also been a leader in community service initiatives such as working with local schools on literacy projects or providing free tax assistance for low-income families. Today Defiance College is accredited by numerous regional accrediting organizations including North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCACS) and continues to serve over 1,400 students from across Ohio and beyond each year.
