Davis and Elkins College was founded in 1904 in Elkins, West Virginia. It was the dream of Senator Stephen Benton Elkins and Henry Gassaway Davis to create a college that would provide educational opportunities for the people of West Virginia. The college opened its doors to students on September 15, 1904 with an enrollment of 75 students. The college initially offered programs in the liberal arts, with additional programs added over time. In 1907, Davis and Elkins College became affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA) and has remained so ever since.

In the early years of its existence, Davis and Elkins College faced several challenges including financial difficulties due to mismanagement by some of its leaders and a lack of public support. Despite these difficulties, the college managed to survive thanks to its dedicated faculty members who provided quality education to its students. In addition, generous donations by alumni and other supporters helped keep the college afloat during this period.
