Davidson College was founded in 1837 as a private liberal arts college in Davidson, North Carolina. It is the first liberal arts college to be established south of the Mason-Dixon Line. The school was established by Presbyterian minister William Lee Davidson, who wanted to create an institution that would provide higher education opportunities to young men of the South. The college was initially named Concord Academy and began with just two faculty members and 16 students. Over the years, Davidson College has grown significantly, now boasting an enrollment of over 1,800 students and nearly 200 faculty members.
