CUNY at City College was founded in 1847 as the Free Academy of the City of New York. The school was founded by Townsend Harris, a wealthy merchant and diplomat, with the goal of providing an affordable, quality education to students of all backgrounds. The school was one of the first public colleges in the US and was unique in that it offered free tuition to its students. The Free Academy began with just a handful of students, but quickly grew in popularity. In 1866, it became a degree-granting institution and changed its name to The College of the City of New York (CCNY). In 1919, CCNY adopted its current name—The City College of New York (CCNY).
Over time, CUNY at City College has grown from a small liberal arts college into a major public university with over 16,000 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled. It is now home to 8 different schools offering more than 100 different degree programs in subjects ranging from engineering and computer science to liberal arts and humanities.
