Cumberland University was founded in 1842 as Cumberland College by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. It began with just four faculty members and a handful of students, but quickly grew to over 400 students and nearly 20 faculty members. The college was located in Lebanon, Tennessee and was initially an all-male school. In 1843, the first female student was admitted and the college became coeducational. During the Civil War, Cumberland College closed its doors due to financial difficulties caused by the war. When it reopened in 1866, it had been renamed Cumberland University.
The university continued to grow over the next several decades, adding new courses of study and establishing a law school in 1880. The law school produced many notable alumni including Edward W. Carmack, who served as a U.S Senator from Tennessee from 1901 to 1907; William Bate, who served as Governor of Tennessee from 1883 to 1887; and John Crowe Ransom, who served as a U.S Senator from Tennessee from 1911 to 1917 and again from 1923-1925. In 1930, Cumberland University merged with nearby Ward Seminary for Women which had been founded in 1889 by Lizzie Crowe Ward; this merger allowed for more women to attend the university and expand their educational opportunities at Cumberland University. In recent years, Cumberland University has continued to make strides towards providing students with an excellent education while also being a leader in innovation within higher education circles across the country. Currently there are more than 3200 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at the university studying diverse subjects such as business administration, criminal justice administration, nursing/healthcare management, education technology leadership and many other fields of study offered through its various schools/colleges/departments on campus or online programs available through its virtual campus platform CU Online Campus Connection (OCC).
