The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) was founded in 1946 by Frances Roth and Katharine Angell. Located in Hyde Park, New York, the CIA was established to provide a professional education to aspiring chefs and culinary professionals. Initially, the institute offered two-year associate degree programs in restaurant management and culinary arts. Over the years, the CIA has expanded its academic offerings to include bachelor’s and associate degrees in baking and pastry arts, culinary science, applied food studies, hospitality management, and more. In addition to its educational programs, the CIA also provides continuing education courses for professionals as well as custom corporate training services. The institute’s library also houses over 10 thousand volumes on food-related topics.
The CIA has become an internationally renowned institution due to its commitment to excellence in culinary education. It is one of only two schools in the world to be accredited by both The American Culinary Federation Education Foundation Accrediting Commission (ACFEFAC) and The Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC). Additionally, it is recognized as a leader in sustainability initiatives such as energy conservation practices on campus. In 2018 alone, the CIA diverted over 2 million pounds of waste from landfills through composting efforts at their Hyde Park campus. The institute has also been featured on several television shows such as Top Chef Masters and Chopped Junior. Through its many accomplishments over the years, the Culinary Institute of America continues to set itself apart as a leader in culinary education.
