Cornell College was founded in 1853 by the Reverend George Bryant Bowman. It was originally named the Iowa Conference Seminary, however, it was later changed to Cornell College in honor of William W. Cornell, who had given a substantial donation to the college. The college’s first building, Old Seminary, was completed in 1856 and housed both classrooms and a chapel. In 1863, the college received its charter from the state of Iowa and began offering degrees in 1865. During this time, the college also established a library and museum for students to use for research and study. In 1867, Cornell College added its first professor with a doctorate degree to its faculty. Throughout its early history, Cornell College continued to grow in size and stature with new buildings being constructed throughout the 19th century including Carnegie Hall (1894), Thomas Commons (1898), and King Chapel (1901). By the early 20th century, Cornell had become an established liberal arts college with an enrollment of over 500 students. In recent years, Cornell College has become increasingly diverse with students from all over the world studying at this prestigious institution.
