Converse College was founded in 1889 by Dexter Edgar Converse, an entrepreneur and philanthropist from Spartanburg, South Carolina. The school was initially named “Converse Female College” and offered a classical education for young women. It was the first college in South Carolina to award the Bachelor of Arts degree to women. In its early years, Converse grew rapidly; it had over 500 students by 1895. The college continued to grow throughout the 20th century, adding new programs and facilities, including an art gallery, a library, and an auditorium. In 1992, it became coeducational and changed its name to Converse College. Today, the college offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in a variety of disciplines such as business administration, nursing, education, fine arts, English literature, and more. It has also strengthened its commitment to international education through several exchange programs with universities around the world. The college has maintained its commitment to excellence in teaching and research while staying true to the values of its founder: service to others and dedication to personal growth through meaningful learning experiences.
