Concord University is a private liberal arts college located in Athens, West Virginia. Founded in 1872, Concord University has been providing quality education to students for over 140 years. The university was originally founded as the Concord Normal School, a teacher-training school that was dedicated to preparing young men and women for a career in teaching. In 1890, the name of the school was changed to Concord State Normal School and it began offering courses in other disciplines such as science and literature. By 1909, the school had become an accredited four-year college and its name was changed to Concord State Teachers College.
Over the next several decades, Concord continued to expand its academic offerings and by 1986 had become a comprehensive university with degree programs in business administration, education, health sciences, natural sciences and social sciences. In addition to offering traditional undergraduate degrees, Concord also began offering master’s degrees in certain fields of study such as business administration and education. In 2011 the university expanded further with the opening of its first doctoral program in educational leadership. Today Concord University is recognized nationally for its excellent academic programs and continues to be one of West Virginia’s leading universities for higher education.
