Columbia International University was founded in 1923 as Columbia Bible School by a group of local believers in Columbia, South Carolina. The school was established with the goal of providing higher education that was focused on Christian values and preparing students for the ministry. Over the years, the school has grown and evolved significantly. In 1954, it changed its name to Columbia Bible College and began offering four-year degrees in biblical studies. In 1961, it was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and changed its name to Columbia Bible College & Seminary. In 1993, it adopted its current name after receiving approval from SACS to offer graduate degrees.
In recent years, CIU has continued to expand its offerings to include more than 30 majors across three colleges: Arts & Sciences, Business & Intercultural Studies, and Education & Human Services. In addition to traditional undergraduate programs, CIU also offers adult degree completion programs for those who have already completed some college coursework but need additional credits to earn their degree; online degree programs; dual enrollment opportunities for high school students; and several international study abroad programs. As part of its commitment to Christian values, CIU also offers a wide range of spiritual formation activities such as chapel services, mission trips, retreats, and volunteer opportunities through various ministries on campus.
