Colorado State University (CSU) was founded in 1870 and is located in Fort Collins, Colorado. It was originally known as the Agricultural College of Colorado and was established by an act of the Colorado legislature. The college started with just 20 students, but by 1879 had grown to 80 students and two faculty members. The college’s first president, William E. Morgan, set the tone for what CSU would become: a school that combined education, research and public service to benefit the people of Colorado.
The college underwent several name changes throughout its history; it became Colorado Agricultural College in 1889, then Colorado State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1935. In 1957 it officially became known as Colorado State University. During this same period, CSU began to expand its academic offerings beyond agriculture, including programs in engineering, business administration and education.
In 1965 the university’s first doctoral program was offered in mathematics and by 1975 CSU had developed into a comprehensive university offering over 100 undergraduate degree programs. Today CSU offers over 200 degree programs across 8 colleges at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Throughout its history CSU has been committed to providing quality educational opportunities to students from all backgrounds while also advancing knowledge through research activities that benefit society at large.
