Colorado Mesa University (CMU) began as a small college in 1925, known as the Grand Junction Baptist Normal School. The school was founded by a group of local Baptists who wanted to create a place of higher learning for their children. In 1931, the college was renamed Mesa College and began offering its first four-year degree programs. In 1937, the college underwent another name change to become Mesa State College. During this time, the school continued to expand its academic offerings and student population. In 2011, it was renamed Colorado Mesa University to reflect its regional presence and expanding mission.
Today, CMU is home to over 11,000 students pursuing more than 150 degree programs across six schools: Arts and Sciences; Business; Education; Engineering and Computer Science; Health Sciences; and Liberal Arts & Sciences.
