The College of William and Mary is the second oldest college in the United States, founded in 1693 by a royal charter from King William III and Queen Mary II. The college has a long history of academic excellence, having produced three U.S. presidents, countless Supreme Court justices, and Nobel Prize winners. It is also one of only two universities in the United States that is both a research university and an undergraduate liberal arts college. The college’s original campus was located near what is now Colonial Williamsburg in Williamsburg, Virginia. During the Revolutionary War, the school was forced to close temporarily due to British occupation of Virginia but reopened shortly after independence was declared. In 1906, the school moved to its current location in Williamsburg where it continues to thrive today. Throughout its history, the College of William and Mary has remained committed to its core mission of providing a quality education for its students while maintaining its commitment to public service and research excellence. Today, it stands as one of the most prestigious institutions of higher learning in America and continues to uphold its commitment to excellence with a diverse student body and faculty from around the world.
