College of the Ozarks was founded in 1906 by Reverend James Forsythe, a Presbyterian minister and educator. Located in Point Lookout, Missouri, the college was created as an educational institution focused on providing a Christian education to students of all backgrounds. Initially known as the School of the Ozarks, it opened with just 25 students and three instructors. Over time, its curriculum expanded to include more traditional academic subjects such as math and science. By the late 1940s, enrollment had grown to nearly 500 students and the school was renamed College of the Ozarks.
The college continued to expand throughout the 20th century. It established a nursing program in 1950 and began offering four-year degrees in 1955. In 1966, College of the Ozarks became one of only two private schools in Missouri to be accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA). The college also built its first dormitory during this period and began offering full-time faculty positions with competitive salaries. In recent years, College of the Ozarks has continued to grow and evolve both academically and physically. It now offers more than 30 different majors across six departments including Business Administration; Education; Humanities; Natural Science; Social Science; and Visual & Performing Arts. The campus has been expanded to include new residence halls, classrooms, student activity centers, sports facilities, libraries and other amenities designed to enhance both academic study as well as student life activities. Today, College of the Ozarks remains committed to providing quality Christian education while also preparing students for professional success after graduation.
