The College of St. Elizabeth was founded in 1899 by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, a congregation of Catholic women religious. The college began as a small liberal arts school for women and was originally named the Academy of Saint Elizabeth. In 1904, the school was granted a charter by the state of New Jersey and changed its name to College of Saint Elizabeth. At this time, it began offering four-year degrees in education and music. Over the years, the college continued to expand its academic offerings and became co-educational in 1969. Today, the college offers more than 40 majors in fields such as business, education, nursing, liberal arts and sciences, and professional studies. The college also offers master’s degree programs in business administration, nursing practice, educational leadership and teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL).
