The College at Brockport, State University of New York (SUNY) was established in 1835, originally as the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary. The seminary was created to provide educational opportunities for the children of settlers in Western New York. In 1866, the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary was reorganized and renamed the Brockport Collegiate Institute. Through the years, additional courses were added to the curriculum and a four-year college program was established. In 1923, Brockport became part of the SUNY system and its name changed to The College at Brockport.
In 1933, after a devastating fire destroyed much of campus, a major rebuilding project began that included new academic buildings and residence halls. During WWII many of these buildings were used as barracks by members of the U.S. military. After WWII ended, enrollment increased significantly as returning veterans took advantage of their GI Bill benefits to attend college. By 1955 enrollment had grown from 400 students to nearly 1,500 students and more construction projects were undertaken including new dormitories and dining facilities.
In 1965 The College at Brockport acquired its first doctoral program in physical education with an emphasis on human performance technology which has since grown into one of the largest doctoral programs in kinesiology in the country today. In addition to this doctoral program, The College at Brockport now offers over 50 undergraduate majors along with numerous minors and graduate degrees across five schools including Arts & Sciences; Education; Health & Human Performance; Nursing; Professional Studies & Social Work; Business Administration; Visual & Performing Arts; Graduate Studies & Continuing Education; International Education & Global Programs; Military Science/ROTC and University Police Department/Public Safety Training Center (UPD/PSTC).
