Coe College was founded in 1851 by the Rev. Williston Jones, who had a vision of providing quality education to young men and women. Its first classes were held in a small frame building on the south side of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In its first year, Coe had only six students and three instructors.
Throughout its history, Coe College has been dedicated to providing an excellent education to students from all walks of life. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Coe was one of the few schools open to African-American students in the Midwest. The college also welcomed women in its classrooms for the first time in 1883 and became fully coeducational by 1912. During this period, Coe also established a number of prominent programs including a law school, medical school and engineering school. In more recent years, Coe has continued to grow and expand its academic offerings.
