Cleveland State University was founded in 1964 and is part of the University System of Ohio. It is a public research university located in downtown Cleveland, Ohio. The university originally opened as Fenn College, which was established in 1929 by Leonard C. Hanna Jr., a prominent Cleveland businessman and philanthropist. In 1965, the state of Ohio assumed control of the college, changing its name to Cleveland State University. At this point, it began offering four-year degree programs in addition to its two-year associate’s degrees.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the university continued to grow and expand its academic offerings as well as its student body. In 1987, it established the College of Urban Affairs and began offering doctoral programs for the first time. Since then, it has added several professional schools such as business and law that have helped make it one of the top universities in Ohio. In 2000, CSU became one of only three universities in Ohio to be classified as an “urban research university,” a designation that recognizes their commitment to research excellence and community service. Today, CSU is home to over 18000 students from around the world who come here for a variety of reasons ranging from excellent academics to vibrant campus life.
