The Cleveland Institute of Art was founded in 1882. It has a long and rich history as Cleveland’s oldest art school. The school was initially founded to provide vocational training for students interested in fine arts, industrial arts, and crafts. It has since evolved into a college of art and design that offers Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degrees in 15 different majors, with concentrations in drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, digital media and animation. In addition to its BFA program, the institute also offers Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degrees in six areas: Painting & Drawing; Sculpture; Photography & Digital Media; Printmaking & Book Arts; Ceramics & Glass; and Design & Crafts. The institute also offers certificate programs for students who wish to pursue specialized study in areas such as digital illustration or advertising design.
In recent years the Cleveland Institute of Art has continued to expand its curriculum to include new fields such as interactive media design, game design and development, motion graphics and web design. This expansion reflects the changing nature of the creative industries that are increasingly reliant on digital technologies and media platforms. To accommodate these changes the institute has invested heavily in state-of-the-art technology including 3D printers and scanners as well as virtual reality equipment used for teaching 3D modeling techniques. Additionally the school has forged partnerships with local companies such as Google Inc., Adobe Systems Inc., Microsoft Corporation and Apple Inc., allowing students access to industry level software programs for their projects at no cost.
