Clarion University of Pennsylvania was founded in 1867 as the Carver Normal School. It was then known as the first normal school in Pennsylvania and was created to provide teacher education and training. The school was renamed Clarion State Normal School in 1887 and the first classes were held in 1888. In 1915, it became a four-year college, offering bachelor’s degrees for the first time. In 1926, the name changed again to Clarion State Teachers College. During this time, more than 1,000 students enrolled each year in its various programs. In 1951, Clarion State Teachers College became a university and changed its name to Clarion University of Pennsylvania.
