Cheyney University of Pennsylvania (CUP) is the nation’s oldest historically black college and university (HBCU). Founded in 1837, CUP was originally established as the Institute for Colored Youth by Richard Humphreys, a Philadelphia philanthropist. The school was renamed Cheyney University of Pennsylvania in 1983 to honor its founder and first president, Richard Humphreys.
Over the years, Cheyney University has grown from an all-male school with a curriculum focused on manual labor to a coeducational institution offering a wide range of majors. In its early years, the school provided an education for African Americans who were denied access to other universities due to racial discrimination. Cheyney’s history is closely linked to the civil rights movement and it has produced many prominent alumni including W.E.B Du Bois, Thurgood Marshall, and Langston Hughes.
In recent years, CUP has seen an increase in enrollment as students recognize its rich history and excellent academic standards. A major part of this success can be attributed to its dedicated faculty who have helped create a vibrant learning environment that encourages students to think critically and explore different ideas. As well as providing quality education opportunities for all its students regardless of race or background, CUP also offers numerous student activities that help foster community engagement and leadership skills among its diverse student body.
