Chatham University has a long and rich history that dates back to 1869 when it was founded as the Pennsylvania Female College. The college was established with the primary goal of providing women with higher education opportunities and access to professional studies which had previously been unavailable to them. In 1890, the college changed its name to Pennsylvania College for Women (PCW) and began offering a four-year degree program. By 1955, the college had become one of the largest women’s colleges in the country and was renamed Chatham College after William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham.

The 1960s saw significant growth for Chatham College as it added new academic programs, expanded its campus size, and began admitting men. In 2007, Chatham College officially became Chatham University, reflecting its commitment to providing both men and women with equal access to higher education opportunities. Today, Chatham University offers more than 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs across numerous disciplines including business, nursing, education, psychology, health sciences, nutrition sciences and sustainability studies.
