Central Michigan University, founded in 1892 as Central Michigan Normal School and Business Institute, is a public research university located in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. It is the state’s fourth-oldest public university and the first to offer a four-year bachelor’s degree program. Throughout its history, CMU has grown from a small college to a large university with more than 20,000 students enrolled. The campus has expanded over time to include more than 200 acres of land, with dozens of buildings and facilities dedicated to student learning and living. In addition to its main campus in Mount Pleasant, CMU also operates satellite campuses in various cities around the state.
CMU was originally founded as Central Michigan Normal School and Business Institute with just over 100 students enrolled for classes. The school was established to provide teacher training for those interested in becoming educators in the state of Michigan. Over time, the school began offering additional courses such as science and fine arts courses as well as business courses which led to it being renamed Central State Teachers College in 1927. In 1959, it was renamed again to Central Michigan College of Education before finally being renamed Central Michigan University in 1964 when it began offering master’s degrees in addition to its undergraduate programs. Today it offers more than 200 academic programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels across seven colleges: Arts & Media; Business Administration; Education & Human Services; Health Professions; Science & Technology; Social & Behavioral Sciences; and The Graduate School.
