Cedar Crest College was founded in 1867 by Reverend Thomas K. Beecher as the Allentown Female Seminary. It was originally a finishing school for young women from the Allentown area and beyond. The school offered classes in a range of topics, including literature, math, science, music, and art. In 1912, the institution was renamed Cedar Crest College and began offering college-level courses leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree. The college continued to grow throughout the 20th century and expanded its curriculum to include degrees in nursing and education, as well as various certificate programs. In 1972, Cedar Crest College became an independent institution when it was separated from Muhlenberg College. Since then, Cedar Crest has become one of the top liberal arts colleges in the country with over 1,000 students enrolled annually. In 2015, the college opened its first-ever graduate program with a Master of Science in Nursing degree option. Today Cedar Crest continues to offer a variety of degree programs that focus on providing students with real-world knowledge and experience through internships and experiential learning opportunities.
