The Catholic University of America (CUA) was founded in 1887 as a papal institution by Pope Leo XIII. It is the only university in the United States established and chartered by a pope. The university was founded to provide higher education for Catholics, with the intention of serving the needs of the growing Catholic population in the United States. CUA has grown from its original location on North Capitol Hill to include five schools: Arts and Sciences, Architecture and Planning, Engineering, Nursing, and Canon Law. It is the national university of the Catholic Church in the United States, and it has a rich history and tradition of academic excellence.
