Catawba College has been an integral part of the Salisbury, North Carolina community since its founding in 1851. It is the oldest college in North Carolina and the second-oldest college in the United States. The school was originally founded by two Presbyterian ministers, Reverends John D. and John B. McAllister, and was initially named Catawba Female Institute. In 1891, it was renamed Catawba College, and it became a co-educational institution in 1902.

The college experienced remarkable growth over the next few decades with several new buildings being constructed on campus to accommodate the increasing number of students. In 1932, Catawba College became a liberal arts school and began offering bachelor’s degrees in 1938. During World War II, Catawba College served as a training ground for US Navy and Marine personnel who were preparing to serve overseas.
