Carlow University was founded in 1929 by the Sisters of Mercy as Mount Mercy College. The college began with an enrollment of just 38 students and five faculty members, all of whom were Sisters of Mercy. Over the course of its history, Carlow has grown to become one of the premier institutions in western Pennsylvania. In 1969, Mount Mercy College became officially recognized as Carlow University by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. From this point forward, the university has steadily increased its academic offerings and enrollment. Today, Carlow is home to more than 2,500 undergraduate and graduate students from all over the world who are enrolled in more than 50 degree programs. The university also offers a variety of student activities and clubs that help promote an engaging campus life experience for students.
