Canisius College was founded in 1870 by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and is one of 28 Jesuit universities in the United States. Located in Buffalo, New York, it is the first private college established in Western New York. Canisius College was originally named “St. Michael’s College” and was located on the corner of Main and North Streets in downtown Buffalo. In 1872, a new building was erected on Washington Street and the college moved to its current location on Main Street. From 1872 to 1966, Canisius educated generations of students from across Western New York and beyond. During this time, it also provided a place for members of the Jesuit Order to live, work, and teach philosophy and theology courses.
In 1966, Canisius underwent a major expansion that included constructing several new buildings on campus as well as adding more dormitories. This expansion allowed Canisius to become a four-year liberal arts college with an emphasis on science and technology programs. Since then, Canisius has become an increasingly popular choice for students seeking higher education in Western New York. It now offers over 80 undergraduate programs as well as multiple graduate degrees such as Master’s degrees in Business Administration and Education Leadership & Administration. In 2017, U.S News & World Report ranked Canisius College among the top 200 colleges & universities nationwide for its commitment to academic excellence and student success.
