Calvin College was founded in 1876 by the Christian Reformed Church. It was originally known as Grand Rapids Theological Seminary and was located in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. The school’s mission was to provide theological education to church leaders. In 1892, the school changed its name to Calvin Theological Seminary and moved its campus to its current location on the east side of Grand Rapids.

In 1940, the college changed its name yet again to Calvin College, signifying its broadening curriculum beyond just theology and divinity studies. As Calvin College continued to grow and expand, it opened more departments such as mathematics, engineering and sciences. In 1947, the college opened up its first dormitory for students who lived at a distance from campus. Over the years, Calvin College has seen a steady increase in enrollment both in undergraduate and graduate programs due to its strong academic reputation and commitment to a Christian liberal arts education. Today, Calvin College is regarded as one of the top Christian liberal arts colleges in the United States with an enrollment of over 4200 students studying in over 100 different majors.
