California University of Pennsylvania (Cal U) was founded in 1852. Originally named the California Normal School, it was established by a group of local citizens with the goal of providing quality education to students in the area. The school was originally a teacher-training institute and its mission was to provide teachers with the necessary skills and knowledge to teach in local schools. In 1927, Cal U became a four-year teacher-training college and changed its name to California State Teachers College. In 1960, it achieved university status and changed its name again, becoming known as California University of Pennsylvania.
Today, Cal U is a comprehensive public university that offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate degree programs through its five academic colleges: Education and Human Services; Arts and Sciences; Business; Health Sciences; and Graduate Studies.
