Hello everyone,
you are probably also looking for a suitable university in California. If you want fun and a decent college, choose California State University Fullerton. In my opinion it was the best decision to have chosen this university, as the conditions are ideal. Check existingcountries.com to see California State University Northridge Review 2.
Life
The most important thing in California is and always will be a car. I lived with two buddies and we didn’t have a car for the first month and you’re just lost in California. The local transport system is absolutely modest and is not recommended. Therefore, you should take care of a car as soon as possible. If you inform yourself, you will also find really cheap and good offers for renting cars. We rented our car through a friend from college for $400 a month and the three of us could do it. The fuel is a bargain compared to Germany. When it comes to insurance, there are also good offers from American friends. We were paying about $150 a month.
The food in America is very fast food-heavy and therefore only tasty at first, because after a while the appetite for burgers and fries goes away. Nevertheless, you should try some good burgers (Habbit or In n Out).
The weather is absolutely amazing in Los Angeles/Fullerton. I hardly saw a cloud in the sky for the first month, so the pool trips are double the fun. The beach is also easy to reach by car and super beautiful. I would recommend Huntington Beach and Laguna Beach.
I’ve seen a lot of the world, but I can’t think of a better region than California. You can get to San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles or Las Vegas within a few hours. My insider tips are Santa Barbara and of course Las Vegas. More students live in Santa Barbara than other people and accordingly there is a lot of partying. Especially on Halloween there is a state of emergency. You can always party in Vegas! The American students from Fullerton also liked to go to Vegas, since the big clubs are not to be found directly in Fullerton. You simply have to experience Vegas. It’s absolutely crazy!!
Otherwise, we often went to clubs in Los Angeles and occasionally met a star or two. All you have to do is make sure that your women-men ratio is at least 1: 1, otherwise it will often be expensive or you will not come to the club at all. The clubs themselves are really great and the DJs play the trendiest music. So also highly recommended.
Studies
The course itself is not particularly demanding, but I would definitely not underestimate it. It means a lot of work and especially in the consulting courses you have to do an above-average amount and you have to weigh up whether you would rather use the time differently. Since my focus is business administration, I chose 3 entrepreneurial courses and a finance course. The 3 entrepreneur courses also included 3 consulting projects. These projects are very interesting, but as I said before, they are also time-consuming. The projects are structured as follows. At the beginning of the lecture period, various real companies are presented, which you will later have to advise. After all the companies have introduced themselves, you have to choose which company appeals to you the most. Then teams emerge (usually 6-8 people) with whom you will work together in an advisory capacity. You initiate an initial meeting with the customer and the customer’s wishes are summarized in a “Letter of Engagement”. Each team member is then assigned their task and then you have to make recommendations to the customers within a semester. For example, I was allowed to take care of the expansion of a watch company to Europe in a project with a colleague. You get to know interesting things and the professor or mentor also give good tips for suggestions for improvement. All in all a very interesting experience, but you have to know beforehand whether you want to put up with the extra time.
Costs
Life is certainly always dependent on the budget, but that should by no means be an obstacle. The university is inexpensive compared to other American universities, and the benefit/cost ratio is definitely right. The university offers the latest equipment (at least in the business administration area) and the study rooms are absolutely top! The professors are usually good too, although you can always change courses at the beginning of the semester.
Otherwise the food is about as expensive as in Germany. The apartments are a bit more expensive, but still affordable. The three of us paid $1800 all inclusive.
Of course, a semester abroad is an investment, but in California every dollar was worth it and it was just great.
In summary, I would definitely recommend this university because you have the opportunity to combine fun and university life very well and in retrospect there is simply no better region than California!
Enjoy your time in the semester abroad, because it is much too short!!
