California State University at Northridge (CSUN) was established in 1958 as the San Fernando Valley State College. Located in the heart of the San Fernando Valley, it was the first four-year public institution of higher education in the area. The college quickly grew to include nine different academic departments and over 3,000 students by 1965. It was officially renamed California State University, Northridge in 1972 and has since become one of the largest universities in California with over 37,000 students enrolled.
