California State University Los Angeles was founded in 1947 as the Southern Branch of the California State College System. The first classes were held in 1949. The first buildings were constructed on the campus in 1951 and by 1953, the first dormitories were opened. In 1959, the college was renamed California State College at Los Angeles and then in 1972 it was renamed to its current name: California State University Los Angeles.

Throughout its history, CSULA has grown substantially both physically and academically. In 1981, CSULA opened a new library building that would eventually become one of the largest university libraries in California. Since then, the physical size of CSULA has tripled with new buildings added for student housing, research laboratories and classrooms. The academic offerings have also expanded over time to include more than 100 undergraduate degrees, 75 master’s degrees and a wide variety of professional certificates.
