California State University at Long Beach (CSULB) was founded in 1949 as Los Angeles-Orange County State College. The college was created to meet the growing demands of the region’s population and to provide educational opportunities for those who had been previously excluded from higher education. The college opened with 50 faculty members and 1,000 students and offered degrees in the liberal arts, sciences, business, and teacher education. Over time, the college expanded its offerings to include master’s degrees, doctoral programs, and a variety of certificate programs. In 1972, the college changed its name to California State University at Long Beach (CSULB).

Today CSULB is one of 23 campuses that make up the California State University system. It is also one of the largest universities in California with an enrollment of more than 37,000 students and over 4,400 faculty members. CSULB offers more than 150 undergraduate majors as well as numerous graduate degree programs across eight colleges.
